Chapter Twenty-three
“Hey guys, I’m here! And I brought Freddie!”
Freddie and I blinked at each other with confusion. We were sitting in his gourmet kitchen—that rarely got used to cook anything—waiting for Rhonda so that we could start our early-morning emergency OLS team meeting. Okay, well, maybe it wasn’t that early, but it was early enough. Grady and I had had a couple of issues to work out. Three to be precise.
“I’m right here,” Freddie said as Rhonda came into the room.
“I mean, I brought Freddy Krueger. A Nightmare on Elm Street,” she said, laughing and holding a DVD in the air. “I know it’s a little early in the day, but if we don’t get watching then we’re never going to—”
“Oh no, no, no,” Freddie said. “We will not be watching any horror movies.”
The hand dropped to her side. “What? Why not?”
“Because my life is now a scary movie thanks to Erica.”
Rhonda smiled. “Freddie, are you still freaking out about the Apple Witch?”
“No, I am freaking out about the freaking you know who and the freaking you know who’s descendants who now want to kill me, thanks to Erica.”
I looked at him. “Will you please stop ending every sentence with thanks to Erica?”
“I would, but I can’t because I’m too scared, thanks—”
“To Erica,” I finished for him.
“What is going on with you two?” Rhonda asked. “Freddie, did you have too much Halloween candy again? You know the sugar makes—”
“I did not eat too much candy,” Freddie said, slapping the counter, sending a tidal wave of mini-chocolate-bar wrappers cascading to the floor. He whipped his hand up and pointed at her. “Not one word.”
We filled Rhonda in on everything that happened. When we were through all she said was, “Whoa.”
“So you’re the ex-cop,” Freddie said. “What do we do? I don’t want to die. And I’m pretty sure the—you know who now has my scent.”
I frowned at him. I mean, even if the Apple Witch was real—which she was not—I don’t think she’d be able to smell anything but her rotten-apple face. I mean, think about it.
“Well, you should definitely tell Grady,” Rhonda said. “Not that he can do much about it.”
“Forget about Grady. He’s not part of this. He has his investigation, we have ours.” When I said that we told Rhonda everything, I didn’t mention the part where Grady and I … reconnected. I didn’t tell Freddie that part either.
“Whoa. Whoa. Whoa,” Freddie said. “You just said investigation. Since when is this an investigation? We agreed there would be no investigation.”
“Well…” I said, chewing on the corner of my thumbnail.
“No. No. No,” Freddie said. “Remember? You said at least we’re on the same page about something.” He said it in a very obnoxious high-pitched girly voice.
“Well…”
“I like where this is going,” Rhonda said, sitting up in her seat. “Erica, please tell me you have switched your vote.”
“Well…”
Suddenly, a mini chocolate bar came out of nowhere and bounced off my chest. “Erica, what are you doing?”
I held up my hands just in case Freddie decided to bombard me with more chocolate.
